Pol Espargaro: 2027 technical reset could favour Moto2 rookies
KTM test rider Pol Espargaro warns that upcoming 2027 regulations and Pirelli rubber could disrupt the current MotoGP hierarchy.

A major shift in the MotoGP rider lineup could be on the horizon as the championship prepares for sweeping technical changes. KTM test rider Pol Espargaro has cautioned that established stars may struggle to adapt to the new machinery, potentially opening the door for incoming debutants to hit the ground running.
Espargaro stands as one of the few test riders with extensive experience on the upcoming 850cc prototypes and Pirelli tyres. Speaking during a recent paddock appearance, he noted that the new era represents a fundamentally different challenge. He suggested that current frontrunners might falter while riders currently off the pace could suddenly find formidable speed.
The primary hurdles involve a substantial reduction in engine power and a distinct shift in tyre characteristics. Espargaro explained that current premier-class veterans have spent years refining their habits around Michelin rubber, making the transition to the new tyres considerably more demanding. Conversely, riders graduating from Moto2 could possess an initial advantage because the riding style required for the new setup bears closer resemblance to the intermediate class.
The 2027 rookie cohort is set to feature several notable arrivals. Dani Holgado and David Alonso have already secured premier-class seats, alongside Senna Agius and Izan Guevara. WorldSBK championship leader Nicolo Bulega is also slated to join the grid, bringing valuable prior experience with Pirelli rubber to his debut campaign.
Development work behind closed doors remains ongoing for all manufacturers, though Espargaro emphasized that the prototypes are far from finalized. Constant tyre selection adjustments by Pirelli mean teams are frequently altering both bike setups and riding approaches. While a handful of regular grid members sampled the 850cc machines during a Brno test in June, further private running is scheduled following the upcoming round at the Red Bull Ring.
